Hi there.

Hi there.

This is Democritus, a site where I put writings that are my own view of the world and perhaps some thoughts about how we may approach things differently. My viewpoint is very much informed by history. One thing I have observed as I have widely read history going back thousands of years, is that people really have not changed. We have the same loves and fears as our ancestors, and, by and large, we respond the same to various stimuli - depending on how we view them.

Democritus was an ancient greek philosopher who was the first to postulate on atomic theory - that everything is created from tiny particles swirling in a void (this in 400 BCE!). Essentially, he realized that everything is connected, and thus the subhead of this site. We are all connected, in our communities and across borders and oceans. Eventually we will all rise or fall together. These pages exist with the goal of rising.

Democritus also said that cheerfulness should be the goal of life and that "a life without festivity is like a "long road without an inn." That has been a guide to my life and I hope these pages can help point to possibilities in that direction for us all, and that happiness for some does not have to come at the cost of desolation for others.

(And the fact that Democritus sounds like it may have something to do with democracy is a bonus with more than a hint of reality)

More than anything, I hope these essays are an opportunity to mull on some interesting connections across time and space and imagine better for all of us on our little blue marble swirling in the void.

Welcome.
